>> playoffs! it's been a long time, since 2007. we think rg-iii is going to play today. he has been cleared to play in this matchup, so why wouldn't he play? we expect him to be there. last time these two teams played, rg-iii was pretty good, only 14 of 15 with 4 touchdown passes, with a 61-yarder here to santana moss. redskins dominated 31-6. nick foles has come away since then, only won one game grant as a team this year. >> nowhere to go but up! >> yeah, rocky start. seems like this win, they are not taking these guys lightly. >> i don't think anyone's trying to take a big picture look at it right now. we can do that after the season when we're all happy. but, you know, right now, i think everyone's focused on one game at a time. that's the attitude you have to have. no one's in the locker room jumping around, excited that we're on a win streak and we're controlling our own destiny. everyone's still focused on what

we have to do and everyone's still feeling sore from the game, so that's a good thing. busy day of football starts at 11:30 with pregame, fox nfl at noon, then of course the game, 1:00 at philadelphia. following that one, we'll have giants and ravens at 4:25. throw away the remote and keep it on fox 5 all day long. >> right, because you got other stuff coming up as well. >> kevin and rock coming in studio from 106.7 the fan, all things redskins,. >> the whole nine yards. thanks, dave. see you later. moving to the news now, the last of the connecticut school shooting victims was laid to rest this weekend. services were held for 7-year-old josephine gay. she was born in columbia, maryland. 6-year-old ana grace marquez-greene was also remembered. and 6-year-old emilie parker was buried in utah. donations are still pouring in from around the world. all the children of newtown were invited to choose from thousands of toys. the united way of western connecticut says the official

fund reached $2.6 million this morning. also this morning-- >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> both support and outrage continue to swirl across the country, two days after the nra released its statement on the school shooting and gun control debate. regardless of which side of the debate you're on, the end goal is to end gun violence. now, this weekend in columbia heights, a crowd gathered for a vigil aimed at doing just that. fox 5's lauren dimarco was there and has this report. >> reporter: the vigil in columbia heights and march to a nearby church were held in honor of the 20 children and six school staff members killed in newtown, connecticut last week. local school teacher trish collard and her husband tim were among those who gathered to call more attention to gun violence. >> sometimes tragic things can lead to some momentus things. >> reporter: president obama appointed vice president joe

biden to head the administration response to the shooting, calling for swift action and a ban on the sale of assault weapon and high capacity ammunition magazines. but the demonstrators are gathering in part as response to this statement from the nra. >> with all the money in the federal budget, can't we afford to put a police officer in every single school? >> to me, simply adding more guns is not the right answer. >> we're seeing murderers and murder-suicides, mass shootings on all different levels. to think that somebody as big as a national rifle association thinks we should add more guns to that equation, to arm our teachers, to send to our public school system is completely preposterous. >> reporter: eddie winegarden is a director for the project against gun violence. he's also a victim. his mother was shot and killed by her husband in front of him, when he was just two years old. he supports an all-out gun ban. >> australia led a great example, where they actually

purchased back weapons and gave fair dollar amount to the people that had them as they initiated their ban. i think that's something that could take place in this country. >> reporter: others here believe there should be a way to cut down on the violence while still protecting the second amendment. >> i think this is not going to be one of those things where we're looking at too bad, then two months later, nobody thinks about it. i think people finally are realizing that there has to be some steps that are taken that don't interfere with the right to bear arms. >> that was fox 5's lauren i did dimarco. there have been more than 100 shooting deaths in the united states in the week since the tragedy in newtown. dc police are still on the hunt for a killer. two people were killed in northeast around 2:00 yesterday morning. one of them was found in a car, the other lying in the middle of the road. 44-year-old raymond harris died from his injuries. the other person is in critical condition. >> at this time, we do believe that somebody approached the

vehicle on foot and fired into the vehicle. police are offering a $25,000 reward for more information that would lead to an arrest in this case. just over eight days until we reach the so-called fiscal cliff, the president and lawmakers have left dc for the holiday break without a deal in place. president obama maintains he he's met republicans halfway in negotiations, but that's still not good enough for republicans, which means the future for tax cuts is still uncertain. here's the latest. >> reporter: dc may be shutting down for christmas, but the clock hasn't stopped running and the fiscal cliff is closer than ever. no deal was reached this week to keep taxes from going up for everyone at the end of the year. house speaker john boehner says he's hopeful a deal can be reached, but in his weekly address, he continued hammering away at president obama. >> this was the year the size of

our debt, all $16 trillion of it, surpassed the size of our entire economy. it's a grim milestone, one of many we'll have to bear if we don't come to grips with it. the president's solution of raising tax rates would still leave red ink for as far as the i can see. >> reporter: president obama landed in ha for the christmas break. on friday, the president said he believes it's still possible to avoid the fiscal cliff, but also acknowledging the political reality by pushing a scaled-back plan for cutting taxes on the middle class. >> even though democrats and republicans are arguing about whether those rates should go up for the wealthiest individuals, all of us, every single one of us, agrees that tax rates shouldn't go up for the other 98% of americans, which includes 97% of small businesses. >> reporter: the president wants that middle class tax cut and he wants to preserve unemployment benefits that are set to expire

at the end of the year. in washington, steve sintani, fox news. another big story today, it's holiday travel. there have been huge crowds at airports and wall-to-wall traffic on the roads this weekend. on top of all that, the weather isn't making things easier in most parts of the country. there's snow and wind, already forcing flights to be canceled or delayed. fox's rick leventhal has more on the travel trouble. >> approach, 133.95. >> reporter: the annual migration home for the holidays, not so merry for many this year. >> they have been giving us the runaround. we're stuck here until sunday. >> i learned my lesson. i won't be traveling again near christmas. >> reporter: friday's high winds and widespread delays, spiking travelers' blood pressure at laguardia. >> this is terrible. i fly a lot. this is the busiest i've ever seen this airport. >> reporter: parts of iowa, wisconsin and nebraska under

feet of snow. hundreds of flights were canceled friday and more saturday, causing a ripple effect. at san francisco, a stranded jennifer northcot. >> you're basically living at this airport? >> yes, i am. >> how do you like our airport? >> i'm sorry, i can't say i like it very much right now! >> reporter: despite the travel troubles, there have been happy moments. home on leave from afghanistan, this husband and wife reunited again at portland international airport. >> i'm here, heim here! >> reporter: after his journey of nearly 7000 miles, army specialist brian pursell said his training and persistence helped make this moment happen. >> i was sprinting across airports because flights were late and they told me i wouldn't make it. i was jumping over railings. there was nothing that would keep me from my wife today. >> it's a nice surprise. >> reporter: meteorologists are forecasting one weather system with a potential to spawn tornadoes, hail and high winds across the south on christmas night, and a big snow maker traveling up the eastern seaboard into next wednesday.

explosion. police believe they essentially turned their house into a bomb to get nearly $300,000 in insurance money. the house explosion leveled an entire neighborhood and killed a young couple. the three suspects will be in court tomorrow to face murder charges. the lowden county sheriff's office needs help finding someone's missing dog. his name is bronco, a german shepherd. he escaped from his groomers friday afternoon. he is 80 to 85 pounds, last seen near the intersection of king street and concocten circle. anyone with information can call 703-777-1021. now, dozens of maryland children are spending their weekend making paper snowflakes that will be sent to survivors of school shootings in connecticut. john hanrahan has the touching story. >> reporter: on a cold and blustery saturday, dozens of local families made a trip to a store called green jeans in the

kentlands neighborhood of gaithersburg. on this trip, they were not coming for the gently used clothing and shoes for sale. they came to make paper snowflakes. >> i love it, with the angel in the middle. >> reporter: these decorations will be sent to the children who survived the masacre at sandy hook elementary in connecticut. the students will resume school at a different building early next year. >> we want to be part of that movement to make that location beautiful for them and maybe take their minds off what happened and brighten their day. there's going to be a winter wonderland. hopefully they will get snowflakes from around the world. >> reporter: co-owner diane stridel said she and her business partner wanted to do something. >> i got in touch with the pta, through the church, heard this is what they really wanted people to do. so here we are here. >> reporter: some of the children making snowflakes are so young, their parents have not told them about the school shooting. >> what did you tell them what

these snowflakes are for? >> just to help other children and they surprisingly didn't ask any more than that. >> reporter: butt older kids here do know about the masacre. they came to send a message. >> that they know that we care. >> do you think it's important that they know that? >> yeah. >> why? >> because they are probably very sad about what happened. >> reporter: middle schooler drew levine said his message is both for the survivors and for those who didn't make it. >> i would say that we're all here for them and it's very sad and we're going to try and prevent this in the future. we miss you. we miss all of them. >> reporter: in gaithersburg, maryland, john hanrahan, fox 5 news. coming up in sports, nfl history is made during last night's falcons game. plus, one game to add to the new record. and the wizards look to avenge friday night's worst loss of the season. we'll tell you how they fared

gun violence and gun control in the wake of the school shootings in connecticut. and a new report cites security failures in the benghazi attack. fox news sunday is tackling all of these topics this morning. chris wallace joins us now with a preview of today's program. good morning to you, chris. >> reporter: good morning to you, wisdom. >> let's start off talking about the big issue, this fiscal cliff business. there's a lot of talk going on, but is there any real progress being made? >> well, not now. everybody's gone home for a cooling off period. people are home for christmas. the president's out in hawaii. i'm sure the staffs are working on it, but, boy, i have to say, like a lot of people, up till thursday, i thought there was, you know, lot of posturing, lot of jockeying, they were going to get a deal done because the alternative was so terrible. after republicans defeated their own speaker, speaker boehner's plan that would only have raised taxes on people making a million dollars or more, less than 1% of all taxpayers and they thought that was too extreme, i'm not sure we'll get a deal.

you could see that in the markets on friday, which went down 100 points. >> another big issue that has everyone talking is what happened in newtown, connecticut, because that has sparked this gun control debate. no matter what side you're on, you'll be talking about that as well. >> we are, indeed. first of all, on the fiscal cliff, we've got two top senate leaders. we'll ask them about that. we'll also talk to them about gun control. and of course the big on that, since the terrible tragedy in newtown was the statement by wayne la pierre, top officials in the national rifle association on friday, in which he seemed to blame this mass murder and a lot of others on the media, on violent videos, on mental health problems. but to say there's nothing that should be done about guns and in fact there should be more guns, armed guards in every school in america, we'll talk about that with the senators as well. we're also, though, i will say, wisdom, going to take a different look at this. because some people say there's a lack of morality in our

culture and our lives. we're going to talk about newtown also with pastor rick warren, the man who wrote "the purpose-driven life," the big best seller a decade ago that says god has a plan for us. we'll talk to him to get his take on how he reads these continuing acts of just unspeakable violence that we see every few months in this country. >> all right. and finally, one of the other issues you'll be talking about, is this report about benghazi, saying there were security failures from the top on down pretty much? >> well, that's right, but not quite the top on down. this was a report that was done by an independent panel, but appointed by secretary of state clinton. they have said there were gross, inadequate failures of security at the consulate, failure to beef up the security beforehand. but having said that, they placed the blame at the assistant secretary level, kind of the midmanager level. they did not blame secretary of state clinton. and one of the questions for our senators is going to be, is the controversy over? or where does it go now?

particularly with susan rice, who was a target of so much fire because of her appearance on the sunday shows, having pulled her name out as a possible nominee for secretary of state. is there any oxygen left in this controversy? >> chris, thank you very much. looking forward to all of that. catch chris on fox news sunday at 9:00 a.m., right after our show. we appreciate it. the first family arrived in hawaii for their holiday vacation. the president and first lady are expected to attend the funeral service today for the late senator danielle inouye and then get out of the public eye for a few days. mrs. obama joined her husband in his weekly address to wish all americans a merry christmas. >> after a decade of war, our heroes are coming home. all across america, military families are reuniting. so this week, let's give thanks for our veterans and their families and let's say a prayer for all our troops, especially those in afghanistan, who are spending this holiday season overseas, risking their lives to

defend the freedoms that we hold so dear. >> this is the first family's fifth christmas in hawaii since mr. obama was elected president. hawaii's not a bad place to be right about now, especially when you consider how cold it is out here, gwen! >> today's not going to be all bad, wisdom. >> oh, really? >> no, it's not, trust me. yesterday, we had really gusty winds, creating very significant wind chills. let's take a look at some of those numbers. yesterday's wind gusts at national were at 43. 44 at baltimore. look, 51 at dulles, unbelievable. it did make it feel a lot colder than it actually was. 45 degrees, yesterday's high at dc, right where we should be. 42 at both dulles and bwi thurgood marshall. right now, looking at the numbers, it is chilly. 29 at dc, 21 at dulles, 28 at baltimore. how do i dwheand to wisdom? plenty of sunshine today, ridge of high pressure building in, clear skies to look forward to. it's not going to be all bad at all. high today will be about 48

including russell crowe and hue jackman. we talked with two of the female leads about singing the scenes live as the camera rolls. >> it's one of the greatest things i've seen this year. i cried like a baby. it was wonderful. i have to ask, did you actually time the tear drop? how do you do that? >> i think what's hardest if you do a scene where you have to start up in one place and go to a dark, a darker and emotional place in the middle of the scene, it's easier if you can get yourself into an emotional state, start the scene, and go and carry that through. it's harder -- there's no planning to it. >> when that keen scene's over, it's one shot, 3 1/2 minutes, one shot, very close-up on your face. when that scene cuts and you walk offset, what do you do? do you go watch a comedy? how do you get back to your normal self? >> i didn't. i didn't. i still had many weeks to go before i was done with the job, so there wasn't a return to my

normal self. and even when i finished the film, it didn't, like, i didn't snap back to me right away. i was feeling -- i felt very vulnerable and kind of exposed. so i just had to kind of gradually get used to the world again. ♪ -- what's the matter with that-- >> in the world of les mis, they are singing. do you think they realize they are singing to each other? >> it's just the way they communicate, which is why -- the audience does really get kind of lost in it. when people do speak in this movie, you almost -- there's a possibility the audience could be, like, taken aback by speaking. and, so, yeah, that's the beauty of it, that you believe it. the characters believe it and you believe it and it's just, like, they have to -- it has to be their way of communicating. >> mama mia, that was done through recorded song in studio, right? >> yes. >> this was done through live singing. if the roles were reversed and mama mia had been done live and this was recorded, how differently would that play out?

>> you know, i don't think either of them would be as good as they are. >> interesting. >> you know what i mean? this definitely lends itself to -- this needs to be grounded in reality as much as possible. and the best way to go about that is to, if the characters are going to be singing, singing straight through and singing live and having that freedom to change things around, from moment to moment, as we do as actors with dialogue. with mama mia, we were running around, lot of, lot of choreography, i don't think it would have worked. >> the performances should win an academy award, according to kevin. he gave it 4 out of 5 stars. >> to each their own. coming up in a matter of minutes, kevin of kevin & rock joins me. gwen, how's the weather in

>> okay, then. >> he's not in the bahamas, folks, although he thinks he s let's get to it. a live look outside at the national christmas tree, and what a wonderful day to get down and see it. we had some really strong, gusty winds yesterday. that's not the case today. you can go down and enjoy this tree and get into the christmas spirit. look at the beautiful blue sky. ridge of high pressure bringing us plenty of sunshine today and the good news, we had really gusty winds yesterday. today, the winds will be light. what a difference a day makes. plenty of sunshine. also, we have unsettled weather to talk about for christmas eve. and in the course of the next seven days, temperatures will be up and down and all over the place. looking at the winds right now, calm everywhere, light winds, and that's going to be the story of the day in the wind department. nothing like yesterday, where we had 51 mile-per-hour wind gusts at dulles, unbelievable. over 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts at both bwi thurgood marshall and national airport. yesterday's highs, 45 at national, right where we should be. 42 at dulles, same at bwi.

those temperatures, a little below the seasonal average. right now, it is a cold start to the day, which is why wisdom's complaining. look at this, 29 at dc. only 19 at manassas. 23 at martinsburg. we've got 28 at fredericksburg. yesterday, the wind chills had us into the 20s most of the day. that's actually what it really felt like. take a look at the cold pool of air. we've got this huge dip in the jet stream over areas of the west. then on the east coast, you can see the same story. we've got this little area of where the jet stream is allowing southerly air to flow in. so west coast seeing a little bit of rain and mountain snow. nothing happening in the deep south, a little bit across louisiana in terms of rainfall. northeast had a fair amount of snow yesterday. they still have a little bit edging its way through north of pennsylvania right now. and we know that game's in philly today. they will have sunshine, about 44 degrees with light winds, so not bad there either. ridge of high pressure is going to give us the sunshine today. skies will be nice and clear, so

not all bad. we are keeping an eye on a system that's going to push its way through. we'll have sunshine today, but with this system as we move through into monday, an unsettled weather pattern, we're looking at possibility of some rain/snow mix, maybe a little sleet that will turn into rain. we've got colder air that's going to override some moisture that's going to be moving in. that, we have to watch. christmas day, fabulous, plenty of sunshine. but then we've got a second stronger system to deal with. here's a look at monday. you can see we're just to the south of that rain/snow mix line here. so we may see a flake or two. primarily looks like a rain event. then we're cool until we get to wednesday. then we start to see more precipitation moving in. this is what we have to watch, because that is a much stronger system. 48 degrees then for today. light southwesterly wind flow. when we move into tonight, 35 degrees, overnight low. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. plenty of sunshine for christmas day, but we'll have to watch monday night and wednesday. let's check in now with wisdom.

[ laughter ] do you think this is the right move to start rg-iii? we're assuming he's been cleared by the doctors. >> every game beinayoff game, yes. you get into that situation where everybody is at false hope with cousins coming in that situation. i'm sitting there watching, like, it's great he's playing against the cleveland browns. cleveland browns won three in a row and everybody was excited about it. give me rg-iii every day. >> you know what? you and i agree. i said this last week. it was the cleveland browns. not a big deal.

it was like an organized scrimmage against a team with a different uniform on. >> okay, it was a big deal. [ laughter ] >> game on the road. >> exactly. >> but the cleveland browns could have got beat by shan tillie high last week. >> i agree with you guys as well. if rg-iii's 100% and he is cleared to play by then, then you got to roll with your guy today, your ferrari. and that's today. >> absolutely. >> kirk cousins did have one start. he got limited opportunities. and he made the most of it. were you impressed, surprised ? >> surprise and impressed. after the first drive, uh-oh, everybody step back. you saw all the facebook posts. kirk cousins, here he comes. >> let's not get carried away. >> then he comes back and does exactly what he's supposed to do against a team that's a little inferior than the redskins, backup quarterback. you see him throwing the bomb to hankerson there. hankerson, i thought, please don't drop that because that would crush the guy! but he moves pretty well for a backup quarterback.

it's not that i thought shanahan made the wrong decision getting cousins in the football game or even drafting the kid. i just thought he would have been there after the draft and we could have got him then, too. >> i agree with you as well. we are on a roll! [ laughter ] let me ask you gentlemen this. we talked about this off the wall and actually agree on this as well. after the season, kevin, would you entertain the idea of trading kirk cousins to get more help for rg-iii for five years down the road or keep him in the backup capacity? >> you guys will probably say i don't agree. i'm with rocky on this one. rocky says we keep him. i say let's keep him. we got a rookie for a reason, waste add draft pick on him. after three years, if he wants to go in the different direction, the team can go in a different direction. let's see with rg-iii, you never know what's going to happen. just like the other day when you saw nada take him out, it's the situation with rg-iii. the way he runs, you never know.

>> since his value is good, i say get rid of him in the off season and find somebody to be a backup quarterback. there's plenty of guys that will be available. mark sanchez will be out there. >> that's true. >> you got some other guys out there. >> sanchez can turn the ball over just as good as cousins! 50 in two years. >> probably dropped a water cup as a backup. [ laughter ] >> you can get a number one draft pick for kirk cousins. i think you have to entertain that idea. one area we agree on. eagles coming in today, looks like a team that's done. last time these two teams played, redskins whooped them 41-6. minimal resistance. do we expect more resistance today? >> same as the cleveland game. i say this one is going to be bad. >> never underestimate the eagles, divisional game, nfc east, going up to philly, and it could be andy reid's last game. so you never know what's going to happen. one side of the stadium's going to be screaming get andy out, and they may be running on the

field carrying him out by half time. >> i got a weird feeling, because it feels like an ambush. because it is andy reid's last game for all intents and purposes in philly. shawn mccoy is coming back to play after being out with a concussion. since the red skin game, why would he even be playing today? i don't get it. seems like they are doing the old last hurrah for andy reid. >> but nick foles is the quarterback. i watched this guy play. you talk about somebody who doesn't need to be in the nfl. terrible. >> i agree. >> i agree. >> not very good, just hope he doesn't get good against this redskins team. >> if he does, bigger issue. >> we talked about the browns last week. what's amazing to me is this team has reeled off five wins in a row. we talk about this every week, very surprised by this. is this something you can see continuing to win six, seven in a row and be that hot team come playoff time? >> we talked about this on friday. if we're going to lose one, this would be it, because then we go-- >> we can't lose one.
